Drinking water at Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Lejeune was contaminated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs). ATSDR conducted a public health assessment to find out if drinking this contaminated water caused health problems.
The contamination of drinking water at Camp Lejeune began in the early 1950s and the most contaminated wells were shut down in 1985. ATSDR has been assessing health risks there since the late 1980s.
