This report is the result of a discussion that occurred among a panel of seven experts surrounding the science of how fiber length relates to toxicity of asbestos and Synthetic Vitreous fibers (SVFs). This issue is relevant to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry’s (ATSDR’s) ongoing work at several sites where fiber contamination is found in or near residential neighborhoods.
The panelists addressed the following topics:
- Factors that Influence Toxicity
- Fibers or Particles
- Deposition and Retention of Short Fibers
- Cancer Effects of Short Fibers
- Non-Cancer Effects of Short Fibers.
Read more about this discussion, including main findings, recommendations, and advice on how to interpret exposures to asbestos and SVFs.
