APPLETREE funding announcement for FY 2023-2028
ATSDR Partnership to Promote Local Efforts to Reduce Environmental Exposure (APPLETREE).
April 1, 2023, began the start of the newest cycle of the APPLETREE cooperative agreement program. For the first year of the 5-year cooperative agreement, 30 state health departments received around $14 million. The APPLETREE cooperative agreement program is projected to provide $698 million to 30 state health department recipients over 5 years.
- The recipients will use the funding to evaluate past and present exposure to environmental hazards.
- The funding will also be used to prevent future exposures.

Program priorities
ATSDR provides resources and guidance to APPLETREE recipients by:
- Identifying exposure pathways at specific sites
- Reviewing environmental and health data to identify potential health risks from exposures
- Making recommendations to prevent exposures
APPLETREE recipients use their funding to:
- Prevent or reduce exposures to dangerous substances through site-related health assessments
- Implement proactive programs, like Choose Safe Places for Early Care and Education, to protect communities from environmental hazards
- Inform community members about potentially harmful substances in their environment that may affect them

The following state health departments will receive APPLETREE Program funding during Fiscal Year 2023–2028:
