The Navy completed an investigation at the Naval Construction Battalion Center (NCBC) Gulfport. Its goal was to identify the area of contamination and address the PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in the groundwater.

Records show that AFFF was likely the source of PFAS contamination in the groundwater. This was a fire suppressant agent used at the Former Firefighting Training Area from 1966 to 1975. AFFF contains PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) and PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid).

PFOS and PFOA were detected in shallow groundwater monitoring wells at the Former Firefighting Training Area. ATSDR will continue to provide technical support to the Navy on request.

US Naval Air Station Meridian (MS)

The Navy is investigating PFAS in the groundwater at NAS Meridian. Records show that AFFF was used at the site in the past as a fire suppressant. This was the likely source of PFAS contamination in the groundwater. AFFF contains PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) and PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid).

ATSDR will continue to provide technical support to the Navy on request.

Marine Corp Air Station Outlying Field Atlantic (NC)

The Marine Corps. Outlying Field Atlantic (MCAS) is located approximately 26 miles east of MCAS Cherry Point. In the past, AFFF fire suppressant may have been stored at the site for firefighting.

AFFF contains PFOS and PFOA, so it was the likely source of PFAS contamination in the groundwater. The residents of Atlantic, NC, are located adjacent to the site. They rely on private water wells for drinking water. Private well water testing in 2017 and 2018 identified one private drinking water well that slightly exceeded the EPA Health Advisory for PFOA and PFOS. The residence has been provided with an alternate drinking water supply.

ATSDR will continue to provide technical support to the Navy on request.
